“The Big Leap” book is written by Gay Hendricks that aims to help individuals overcome their limitations and achieve their full potential. The book explores the concept of the “Upper Limit Problem,” which suggests that individuals often self-sabotage when they reach a certain level of success or happiness. Hendricks argues that by recognizing and overcoming this limit, individuals can experience a “big leap” in their personal and professional lives. Let’s explore this upper limit problem and all the other major concepts in ‘The Big Leap Book Review – A Comprehensive Overview of Gay Hendricks’ Bestseller’.
“The Big Leap” offers a unique perspective on personal growth and development. Its focus on the Upper Limit Problem provides readers with a practical framework for overcoming their limitations and achieving their full potential. Whether you are looking to improve your personal life or advance your career, “The Big Leap” offers valuable insights and actionable advice.
Key Concepts and Principles
Here are the key concepts and principles in my ‘The Big Leap Book Review’:
Upper Limit Problem
The Upper Limit Problem is a concept that refers to the self-imposed limitations that people often face when they reach a certain level of success. According to the book, people have a tendency to sabotage their own success by engaging in behaviors that hold them back. These behaviors can include procrastination, self-doubt, and fear of failure. The Upper Limit Problem is a major obstacle to achieving success. And in order to reach one’s full potential, it must be overcome.“Letting yourself savor natural good feelings is a direct way to transcend your Upper Limit Problem. By extending your ability to feel positive feelings, you expand your tolerance for things going well in your life.“ ~ Gay Hendricks Click To Tweet "Criticism and blame are addictions. They are costly addictions because they are the number one destroyer of intimacy in close relationships."~Gay Hendricks Click To Tweet
Zone of Genius
The Zone of Genius is a concept that refers to the activities that a person is uniquely suited to do. These activities are those that a person is passionate about and that he or she excels at. The book argues that people should focus on their Zone of Genius in order to achieve the greatest level of success. People can achieve a sense of fulfillment and satisfaction by doing what they love and what they are best at. But, when they engage in activities that are outside of their Zone of Genius, that is not possible.
In my ‘The Big Leap book Review’ this concept is a golden goose. If one finds this principle and applies mindfully, wonders and success is inevitable for anyone – an individual or an institution.
The Einstein Time Theory
“When you make a shift to Einstein Time, you experience a major surge in your productivity, creativity and enjoyment.”
The Einstein Time Theory is a concept that refers to the idea that time is relative. The book argues that people should focus on the present moment. And not worry about the past or the future. By doing so, people can achieve a greater level of productivity and success. The Einstein Time Theory is based on the idea that time is a mental construct. And that people can control their perception of time by changing their mindset.
The shift takes place the moment you embrace one profoundly simple truth:
“You’re where time comes from.”
Once you understand that you’re where time comes from you’ve the power to make as much time as you want. You are the boss.
The Ultimate Success Mantra
In the book “The Big Leap” by Gay Hendricks, the concept of the “Ultimate Success Mantra” is a key idea that revolves around the concept of taking yourself to your “Zone of Genius.” The Zone of Genius is where you are doing what you love. And what you are innately talented at. It’s a place of ultimate fulfillment and success. The Ultimate Success Mantra (USM), as presented in the book, is a simple affirmation that you can repeat to help you stay focused on your Zone of Genius. And so, achieve your fullest potential. The mantra is:
“I expand in abundance, success, and love every day, as I inspire those around me to do the same.”
By repeating this mantra regularly, you reinforce the idea that you can continually grow, achieve success. And hence, make a positive impact on others too by operating in your Zone of Genius.
In my first reading 5-6 years ago, I memorized usm. And affirmed it often. And at that time I made a few financial decisions too, then I forgot about the book. But actually those financial decisions I made after my first reading of the big leap are paying off well now! So USM is a powerful tool.
One of the strengths of the book is it’s clear and concise writing style. The author presents his ideas in a straightforward and easy-to-understand manner. This makes the book accessible to readers of all levels of education and experience. The book is also well-organized, with each chapter focusing on a specific concept or strategy.
However, some readers may find the book to be overly simplistic in its approach. The author tends to present his ideas in a black-and-white manner, without acknowledging the complexity of human behavior and the many factors that can influence a person’s thoughts and actions.
Another potential weakness of the book is its heavy reliance on anecdotal evidence. While the author does provide some scientific evidence to support his ideas, much of the book is based on personal anecdotes and stories from the author’s own life.

One of the key takeaways from the book is the importance of identifying one’s zone of genius and dedicating time and energy to it. By doing so, individuals can tap into their innate talents and passions. And achieve a level of success and happiness that they may have thought was unattainable.
